The Islands' namesake, Geochelone nigra nigrita. You will hike among these Galápagos giant tortoises grazing in the wilds of Santa Cruz Island. 10 species out of the original 14 survive. One species has only one survivor, Lonesome George, but the other 9 species are thriving due to the ingenious hatching and repatriation program at the Charles Darwin Research Station. You'll see the tiny hatchlings and learn all about this program on your visit. |
